Meet Ms. Coats, 2nd Grade Teacher
This is my 8th year in the classroom and my 2nd year at FAA. I started teaching in NYC in both the South Bronx and Queens back in 2001.
Upon moving to Minneapolis in 2007, I owned & operated a part time performing arts school for kids in St. Louis Park for many years. Prior to coming to FAA, I taught 4th, 2nd, and 1st grade for Minneapolis Public Schools. I have also taught musical theatre & voice classes! I live with my dog Franklin in Uptown. When I’m not at school, I like to spend time outside walking my dog in all kinds of weather, cooking, hanging with my children ages 17, 15, and 12, and singing. I am also a staff musician (singer) at St Joan of Arc and a volunteer helping adoptable dogs for Saveabull Rescue.

Meet Ms. Demery, 2nd Grade Teacher
My name is Kayla Demery! I will be one of the 2nd grade teachers here at Friendship Academy of the Arts! I was born in Minneapolis, MN and raised in North Minneapolis most of my life. I graduated from Southwest High School in 2014. Growing up I’ve always had the passion to teach and work with children. In 2014 I attended MCTC and received my Associates Degree in Liberal Arts. I recently just graduated from Augsburg University in May of 2022, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. This school year will be my sixth year working at Friendship. I worked five years as an Educational Assistant and this is my 1st year teaching! I am very excited and can’t wait to create a great year with my scholars! My mission is to continue practicing connecting before correcting, encouraging, supporting, motivating, listening and loving students by providing a happy, safe, friendly, and loving community filled classroom, so they are able to express themselves emotionally, socially, and cognitively.
